INTRODUCTION LittleBirdTales is a great language arts resource for elementary grade levels, but can be used by students in upper levels as well as adults. This tool provides students with opportunities to create stories with pictures, videos, and voice and to share literary creations with other students and viewers who have joined the LittleBirdTales site. Student may also e-mail their stories to friends and families from this site to share their creations. This wonderful resource is free of charge to anyone who wishes to write and create stories of their own.
INCORPORATING LITTLEBIRDTALES INTO YOUR CLASSROOM Teachers can incorporate this web tool directly into their language arts program encouraging students to write stories adding pictures, video, and voice. Classrooms with limited computers can use this tool as a center so that all students can have an opportunity to create and share. The teacher can join LittleBirdTales and students can use the same free account, or each student can join on their own so that they are free to create and share at home as well.
Teachers and students can easily navigate through the site. The directions are clear and easy to follow. Pictures can be uploaded, however a microphone is needed to record voices for stories. I have included a copy of a short story that I have started writing as an example of what students can do using this web tool.
LANGUAGE ARTS The subjects taught in elementary and secondary schools that aim at developing students' communication skills. As defined by the International Reading Association (IRS) and the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE), these subjects include reading, writing, listening, speaking, viewing, and "visually representing." LittleBirdTales is a great tool to encourage students to develop their writing skills. Students who struggle with writing can read and record their stories, draw and edit stories, and use video to share their creations with others.
